know this morning about what happened at sandy hook elementary school. in about 30 minutes we expect authorities to hold a news conference right where i am and release the identities of the victims. police say 20 children between the ages of 5 and 10 were killed as well as six adults at the school including the principal and psychologist. sources say adam lanza was armed with three guns, two on him, one found in a car nearby. police say he got the guns from his mother who owned them. she was licensed to have them. she was found dead in her home about 2 1/2 miles from where i am now. every new detail helped paint a picture of a horrifying tragedy. cnn's anderson cooper explains how it unfolded moment by moment. >> all units, the individual i have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gun shots. >> reporter: the first word was chilling. it only got worse. >> they're reporting multiple fatalities involved in this shooting at the elementary school. >> reporter: with each new report, the horror deepened. >> reports say the number of dead closer to 30 than to 20, and sa
to sandy hook elementary school, carrying a virtual arsenal. investigators say the gunman had hundreds of rounds of ammo with him, perhaps enough to kill every student at sandy hook elementary. the connecticut governor says when the gunman heard police arriving, he used one of those bullets on himself. massacre ending as it began, with violence and blood. we have team fox coverage with rick leventhal on today's first funerals for the victims and updates on the survivors. first, the fox report's chief correspondent jonathan hunt live at the fire house in newtown, connecticut. where does the investigation stand tonight? >> it's moving slowly, john, and it's moving methodically. there are, of course, two main crime scenes. the school itself where those 20 children, ages six and seven, and the six female staff members were all gunned down, so horrifically on friday. that crime scene is likely to remain one, according to the cops, for months to come. it will not be reopened as a school until all of the investigative work is done there, if it reopens as a school at all. the second crime scen

in newtown, connecticut. it all started when a gunman entered through the doors of sandy hook elementary school. we are awaiting a press conference, you're looking at that right now. it has not begun, but i do want to give those of you who have joined us a sense of what happened. tom foreman walks us through what happened yesterday morning minute by minute. >> this is what we know at this point about the timeline of the shooting reported by law enforcement officials and witnesses and the layout of the school as best we can piece it all together. 9:30 in the morning, classes had been underway for a half hour. more than 600 students and approximately 50 faculty members inside the building. in addition to that there's a meeting just convened by some of the school officials including the principal in a room somewhere right up here, about seven of them all gathered in one room. about 9:40, ten minutes later, as beck we can make it out, that's when the gunman appears to have entered the building. how? we don't know. they had a new security system right up here that might have kept him out, not
. welcome back to cnn's continuing coverage of the tragedy at sandy hook, elementary. we are here in newtown, connecticut. heading towards the bottom of the hour. i'm kate bolduan and john berman will be back to join me in a couple of minutes. let's catch you up on what we know this sunday. president obama will head to newtown, connecticut, where he will meet with the families of the victims. the president will also speak at a vigil, an interfaith vigil tonight. many people looking forward to hearing his words. we also know 12 of the victims were boys and 8 were girls. the medical examiner released the names of all of the victims yesterday. all of the children were either 6 or 7 years old. while 6 of them have the victi adults, all were women working at the school. united way set up a fund to collect donations for victims' families and the community as a whole. it's called the sandy hook school support fund. all donations will go directly to those affected. many ways to impact your world today. >>> we still don't know much, though, about the shooter, adam lanza. so many questions and very f

rifles in all of our stores chainwide. >>> grief counselors will be on hand this morning. sandy hook elementary school remains closed. jessica rekos will be laid to rest today. she couldn't wait until her 10th birthday to get a horse. she adored them. >>> another big story out of washington where there's been huge movement in the fiscal cliff wrangling with 14 days left to go before huge across-the-board tax hikes. overnight we learned that president obama made an eye-opening new offer in talks with house speaker john boehner. under this new proposal, tax rates would go up on incomes above $400,000. for years the president has campaigned that that number should start at $250,000. he's also offering some new spending cuts to go along with this. speaker boehner's latest proposal called for the tax hikes to kick in at $1 million. cnn's dan lothian is in washington with the latest on this. dan, it really does look like there is some movement. >> it does. this movement came during a meeting the president had with speaker john boehner yesterday at the white house. that meeting lasted for 4

vigils. 20 children and 6 adults died in friday's shooting inside sandy hook elementary. we should begin hearing the first funeral plans for some of the victims very soon. we also want to pass this along. the united way has set up a sandy hook school fund. donations, as you can see right there on your screen, donations sent to the newtown savings bank 39 main street right here in newtown, connecticut. this fund will be used to help pay for the funerals of the victims, john. >>> police say they have found important evidence during their searches at the school and at the shooter's home. we also know now more about the actual shooting and what weapons were used in it. cnn national correspondent susan candiotti joins me now and, susan, what are we learning this morning? >> hi, john. well, we know one thing and that is that federal agents and other investigators who will be back out pounding out the streets today, chasing down leads, information they have that the suspected shooter in this case may have visited gun stores or gun ranges in the days before the attack. however, so far our source

to school today of course with the exception of sandy hook elementary. the students of sandy hook will go back to school after the holidays in a different building some eight miles away, with 20 bright young faces missing from the halls and classrooms. everything is different now. the children of this town are facing a new reality, doing things they never should have to do at this young age. like writing good-bye letters to their friends. we told you last night about 6-year-old jack pinto who was buried yesterday. at the funeral, a note from his friend john reads, jack, you are my best friend. we had fun together. i will miss you. i will talk to you in my prayers. i love you, jack. love, john." there were two more funerals for two more 6-year-old children. jessica rekos and james mattioli were laid to rest today. we will remember them and tonight we honor them. our hearts and thoughts are with their families and their friends. and we wish peace and strength for all the people whose lives jessica and james touched in just six short years. james mattioli was known as jay. just 6 years old,

"cnn newsroom" continues now with brooke baldwin who is in newtown, connecticut. >>> i'm brooke baldwin live today in newtown, connecticut, where today the new reality is sinking in. today parents are living alongside an empty room of the child they lost. left behind in that room, pajamas, favorite toys, books they always read together, parents who know this, even the smell of their child's pillow. and these first responders being called heroes, but still day in and day out living with the images no one could have prepared them to see. today, families are deciding on coffins, head stones, choosing songs that will play at the funerals of first graders. want to tell you about the two little boys who are actually being remembered right now. the funeral for 6-year-old jack pinto began just about an hour ago. jack will be laid to rest today in newtown village cemetery. just a little bit of background on this 6-year-old, jack adored football, his favorite player was new york giants
annual killed 26 students and students at sandy hook elementary school. sandy hook students will return to another school on january 3rd as the community continues to grief and say good-bye. >>> dozens of maryland students spent the day making paper snow flakes to be sent to the shooting victims in connecticut. -on henrehan is live. >> reporter: some of the snow flakes were being made by children so young their parents have shielded them from the details of the mass murder. but those families, too, wanted to send a message. on a cold and blustery saturday, dozens of local families mate a trip to the store called green genes. on this trip, they were not coming for the clothing and gently used shoes for sale but came to make paper snow flakes. these deck racials will be sent to the children who survived the massacre at sandy hook elementary. the sandy hook elementary survivors will resume at another school next year. >> we wanted to make that beautiful for them and take their mind off what happened and bright en their day. there is going to be a winter wonderland and hopefully they'll get

caused the gunman to snap and go on the shooting rampage in sandy hook elementary school. peter doocy joins us with the exclusive. >> good morning, gretchen, adam lanza may are killed because he was mad at his mom for wanting to have him committed. that is it according to a hoo reason who took fox nuse.com, that adam believed that nancy loved the school where she was volunteering more than him and what i was told adam was aware of her participating the court for conservatorship and her plan to have him committed. high was upset and he thought she wanted to send him away. he was really, really angry. the new york post reported that adam lived in his mom's windowless basement with posters covered by posters of gunce. he would play videos. it was a game called the first person shooter game. police didn't find psychiatric drugs in the lanza house and the medical examiner hased a geneist to figure out if there was a trait that could have led adam lanza to mass murder here. here in connecticut there will be funeral for the victims and one of the teachers killed. >> brian: it is interesting
still in mourning, students in newtown went back to school. everyone but the sandy hook kids who will return after the winter break to school in a neighboring town. sandra endo has that part of the story. >> reporter: the first day back to school in newtown. children returning to classes tuesday and the painful reminder of those who could not. on the bus ride to school, grief was a constant reminder. >> i noticed it was quiet because people were thinking about the tragedy that happened. >> reporter: at schools teachers and students spent time to reflect. >> they just talked about how things will get better than they are now. i felt safe because when your teachers talk to and comfort you about everything that happened. >> reporter: for students at sandy hook elementary, the next time they'll return to will be in the new year. newtown superintendent says teachers and students need more time to deal with the trauma and get used to the new space in a neighboring town. state and local officials had no estimate on attendance for newtown's first day back at school. but returning to a ro
